Bryndís Víglundsdóttir

Bryndís Víglundsdóttir is a writer, translator, and retired educator with extensive teaching experience in both Iceland and the United States. After teaching at the Reykjavík School for the Deaf and the Perkins School for the Blind in Boston, she served as principal of the Icelandic School for Developmental Therapy for over twenty years. Bryndís fought to ensure that teachers of children with disabilities had at least the same qualifications as other teachers. Over the years, Bryndís worked with other instructors and students to develop curriculum and the school was eventually incorporated into the University of Iceland’s School of Education.

Bryndís has been a frequent contributor to RÚV, the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service, with both original and translated work. Among her translations are books by Golda Meir, Judy Blume, and James Herriot. In 2007, she co-founded Gaman að Lifa, a publishing house producing audio books.

Bryndís has been active in community organizations and volunteering, for instance serving two years as the chair of the Icelandic chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, an international organization for women educators. Since retiring, Bryndís has remained active in matters related to education, such as leading a research project studying how the elderly contribute to society.

Bryndís was married to Guðmundur Bjarnason, a farmer and forester, until his death in 1983. She has two children, four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Bryndís serves as a language consultant and marketing assistant for Icelandic Roots.
