Virginia, USA

Sverrir Sigurdsson was born in Iceland shortly before the Second World War. He witnessed the British occupation of Iceland, which was carried out to thwart German advance toward North America. After the Allies won the war, he saw his country transform from an obscure, dirt-poor nation to a prosperous one that holds a strategically important position in world affairs.

In 1958 Sverrir went to Finland to study architecture. Like his Viking forefathers, he wanted to enrich his experience in foreign lands for three years before returning to his homeland. But one adventure led to another. After working as an architect for two years in the Middle East, and six years in Africa, Sverrir moved to Washington DC in 1975, where he worked for 20 some years at the World Bank on education projects in the developing world. He now lives in Virginia with his wife, the author Veronica Li, who had published three books before the couple decided on a joint writing project. This project was Sverrir’s biography, Viking Voyager, an Icelandic Memoir. which was published in the U.S. in 2020. Sverrir then translated the book into Icelandic, which Bókafélagið in Reykjavík published in 2021 under the title Á Veraldarvegum. Endurminningar Sverris Sigurðssonar, arkitekts.
